Dave Rowland (b. 26 January 1942, Anaheim, California, USA) was a pop singer and trumpeter in an army band and then became a member of the Stamps Quartet. He toured with Elvis Presley and appears on his records ‘My Boy’ and ‘Help Me’. He worked as part of the Four Guys on Charley Pride’s roadshow and then formed a vocals quartet, Wild Oats. He then hit upon the concept of a group comprising a boy with one blonde and one brunette girl, and he called the group Dave and Sugar. They joined Charley Pride’s roadshow in 1975. Sugar were Vicki Hackeman (b. 4 August 1950, Louisville, Kentucky, USA) and Jackie Frantz (b. 8 October 1950, Sidney, Ohio, USA). Pride co-produced their first country hits, ‘Queen Of The Silver Dollar’, the chart-topping ‘The Door Is Always Open’ and ‘I’m Knee Deep In Lovin’ You’. By 1979 Hackeman, who married Pride’s bass guitarist, Ron Baker, and Frantz had been replaced by Melissa Dean and Sue Powell. The group topped the US country charts with ‘Tear Time’ and ‘Golden Tears’. By 1980 the group was known as Dave Rowland And Sugar, although the group did share the lead Vocals. Rowland then recorded a solo album for Warner Brothers Records. He released a single of his tribute to actress Natalie Wood, ‘Natalie’, but by 1985 he was working as Dave And Sugar again.
